In plain sight, without hiding, visible to the ordinary passerby heading to work each day, they appear—on a street corner or in an alley—the “zombies.” They suffer the effects and consequences of an addictive drug: a synthetic analgesic 50 times more potent than heroin, considered responsible for the rise in drug-related deaths in the United States and now a major political and public health problem. One suffers from back pain due to a car accident, another because he had been using drugs since adolescence until he ended up using fentanyl, and the third because of depression.
